Looking for something to do on these long summer weekends, but don’t want to drive to Houston or Austin? How about some free live music right here in the B/CS? The Starlight Music Series at Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater has been a highlight of the summer since 2004, when such notable musicians as Jerry Jeff Walker and Bruce Robinson kicked off what would become a tradition here in Aggieland. Since then, the lineup has included Asleep at the Wheel, the Bellamy Brothers, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Aaron Watson, Roger Creager, and Jason Bowland & the Stragglers, all successful recording artists and awesome entertainers. The Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra has also made appearances at Wolf Pen Creek throughout the last seven years, embellishing an eclectic collection of musicians with some familiar classical pieces sure to make you close your eyes and just enjoy.
This year is no different. The 2011 Starlight Music Series kicked off on Saturday, May 14th, with Aeromyth, touted as the top Aerosmith tribute band worldwide. What a treat to have a band that regularly performs at venues such as the Key Club in Hollywood and the Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas and that in 2010 signed a contract for a reality TV show based on their career. On May 21st, the Dirty River Boys took the audience for a fast, hard ride with their unique Texas-style bluegrass music. Hailing from El Paso, these three musicians immortalize stories of Texas and the West with their amazing guitar licks and sweetly singing mandolin.
May 28th – The Trishas, with Leannasaurus Rex
But don’t worry, you haven’t missed out on everything! There are still three more awesome concerts left for you at attend, absolutely pro bono. May 28th will see The Trishas, featuring Leannasaurus Rex, taking the stage. Soulful, southern gospel with a taste of bluegrass spills from these women like they were born to do nothing else. This is definitely a concert not to miss!
June 4th – Midnight River Choir
June 4th will find the Midnight River Choir onstage at Wolf Pen Creek. They have found a niche right between what I call rockin’ country and southern rock. Perfect music to just kick back and enjoy on a hot summer night while seated comfortably on a grassy hill under the stars!
June 11th – Satisfaction, with the Texas Twisters and Rock-A-Fella
But if you can only make it to one concert this summer, be sure to come on June 11th, the last night of the Starlight Music Series. The show will open with the Texas Twisters. Be sure to wear your dancing boots, because once you hear these guys you’ll be two-stepping, swing-dancing , and just generally busting a move before you know it! They will be followed by Satisfaction, the ultimate Rolling Stones tribute band. These talented musicians will bring the Rolling Stones to College Station and make them, and all Stones fans around the world, incredibly proud.
There’s just nothing like great music to bring a community together. Especially when that great music is FREE. The City of College Station, with their generous sponsor, Suddenlink, continue to outdo themselves year after year with this incredible series of fun family entertainment. Be sure to keep your Saturday evenings free and come join your friends and neighbors at Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater. The gates open at 6PM, and the shows start at 7PM.
