When it comes to searching for information, the most common approach for people is to go on the Internet and search for mostly anything online using a search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, and etc. to find information about a particular subject. Most people are interested in checking out a specific website such as www.movies.com. Almost everything you see on the internet has a web address, which identifies the location of specific web page on the Internet such as http://www.usajobs.gov. Before we discuss how to register for a domain, we will discuss what a domain name is and how it works then we will explain how to own your own domain for your business needs. 

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the component of a web address that identifies and locates an entity (such as a person, business, or organization) presence on the Internet. In tech speak, the domain name is representation of the numeric IP Addresses assigned to individual computers.1 Note: IP stands for Internet Protocol. Domain name is also like a phone number that is easy to remember. For example, centennialarts.com, nytimes.com, monster.com, yahoo.com, wikipedia.org, spain.info, navy.mil, and etc. are Internet domain names.2 Most domain names are consider top-level which are controlled by the IANA in what’s called the Root Zone Database. Note: IANA stands for Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. More common top-level domains include:

  • COM- commercial websites, though open to everyone3
  • NET- network Web sites, though open to everyone3
  • ORG- non-profit organization Web sites, though open to everyone3
  • EDU- restricted to schools and educational organizations3
  • MIL- restricted to the U.S. military3

In a domain name, each word and dot combination you add before a top-level domain indicates a level in the domain structure. Each level refers to a server or a group of servers that manage that domain level.3 These few top level domains such as .com, .org, .net, and etc can be are available to register for your own domain.4

What is domain name registrar?

A domain name registrar is service that allows you to officially register your desired website domain name so that it is unique to you, and no one else can own it. Legitimate domain name registrars are accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). ICANN is a private (non-government), non profit corporation that has been given the responsibility of allocating IP addresses and managing the Domain Name System which allows you to reach a website by typing in its name, rather than its numerical IP address. What is the domain name registrant?

A domain name registrant is the person, company or entity who owns or holds a domain name. Whenever a corporation or company register a domain name, the registrant should be the company name (not an individual employee within the company) to ensure the business maintains ownership of the domain name.5 Note: When you order your domain, you can designate the registrant and administrator of the domain. The registrant has final authority and responsibility regarding the use of your domain name. 7 During the ownership period, the owner of a domain name is free to transfer, sell, etc. that domain name at any time. The ownership of a domain name ceases once a domain name expires and the owner loses all rights to this domain name.8
